Development of a new HMI dashboard for the food industry

By: Simon Moore

Our recent assignment involved the development of a web-based SCADA interface for a major processor in the food industry. The challenge lay in visualizing real-time data from over 200 sensors distributed across the production lines.

Industrial control room with monitors

Visualization of process data in an industrial environment.

Technical Implementation

The application runs on a local edge server within the secure factory network. Via secure WebSocket connections, real-time data from PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) is retrieved and displayed in a structured manner.

  • Platform-independent web interface accessible from any workstation.
  • Live data streams with latency of less than 100ms.
  • Advanced alarm management and historical trend display.
  • Strict security in accordance with industrial standards (IEC 62443).

Dashboard Structure

The design follows the principles of effective HMI development: clear, contextual, and focused on rapid decision-making. The color palette is aligned with the client's corporate identity, featuring a dark interface to reduce eye strain in control rooms.

Process Overview

High-level view of all production lines and their status.

Detail Panels

In-depth data per machine, including sensor measurements and settings.

Alarm Log

Categorized and filtered view of all faults and notifications.

The project has been successfully commissioned and contributes to increased efficiency and reliability of the production process. The scalability of the solution makes future expansions straightforward.
